Professional work becomes civic vocabulary.
Finance, economics, housing development and tax work made public budgets, land use and financing less abstract. Public service returned the favor by making consequences harder to hide inside a model.

The categories are real. The life refuses to stay inside them.
Finance, economics, tax, housing, public administration, family systems, endurance sport, radio and community institutions are the interconnected work of my professional, civic and personal life. I did not assemble them for a biography. I am rarely a casual observer. I am usually knee-deep in it.
Before finance, City Hall, and fatherhood
Manchester. October 1. Foothill. Beta Pi.
Team USA world-championship team gold in August 1993 was followed within weeks by complete financial independence. Foothill College meant Dean’s List work, 28 transferable quarter units, a full-time job and continued training. Then came Sigma Chi: Beta Pi pledge in September 1994, initiation in April 1995, later Kappa Theta affiliation, and a Life Loyal Sig identity that never became merely an old-college footnote.
That period explains the operating style better than another title list does.

The connective tissue
The distinction is not the number of categories. It is sustained immersion: the work, study and personal time keep teaching one another what to notice.
Planning eventually becomes family planning.
Not the euphemism. The actual work: schools, activities, schedules, travel, safety, culture, budgets, transportation and keeping enough margin for the unexpected.

Civic work is learned at conversational distance.
Facility tours, field visits, ride-alongs, community meetings and nonprofit work repeatedly mattered because they replaced a policy abstraction with somebody’s actual operating problem.
Culture is not an extracurricular footnote.
Mexican-American identity, family history, Rosas de María, and the experience of becoming Chico’s first Hispanic/Latino Councilmember and Mayor belong to the same biography rather than a separate diversity sidebar.
Rosas de María connects family, language, nonprofit governance, youth development, music, performance and cultural continuity. It is exactly the sort of institution that disappears if everybody agrees it matters and nobody carries the administrative work.

Public life
Politics was never the whole civic story.
Eight years on the Chico City Council and two as mayor sit beside regional transportation, public finance, accessibility, Special Olympics, Shalom, shelter work, youth organizations and the ordinary volunteer institutions that keep communities from becoming a collection of press releases.
Life between the categories
Planning is easier to understand when the life is visible.
Family, travel, sports and outdoor time are not a side biography. They are where time, money, risk, logistics, education, culture and contingency stop being theoretical.
Home and family
The long-range plan eventually meets the school calendar, the mortgage, the activity schedule and the people it was built to serve.
Travel and place
Roads, weather, water, time and contingency planning are recurring family subjects, not merely vacation logistics.
Community through children
Sports, schools, swimming, drama and dance are also introductions to the volunteer systems that make a community work.
Outdoors
Running, swimming, backcountry and cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, snow camping, whitewater, biking and routes that punish lazy assumptions quickly.

Systems become personal quickly
Transportation policy looks different with a child on your lap.
Transit, streets, schools, schedules, housing and public space were never merely Council agenda categories. Using those systems with children made the practical questions harder to ignore: whether a route works, whether a connection is safe, how long a transfer takes, and what a family has to carry to make the day function.

Campaigns, Council work, community organizations, family, athletics, travel and ordinary days are kept in a browsable archive. Where the exact date or context is still being reconstructed, the image stays visible with that uncertainty stated plainly.
